System overload: laying the groundwork for faster aging and chronic disease

I am going to be 50 later this year and I want to know how I can look good and feel good for at least another 50 years (!).

So, today’s big question is: what makes us age faster and/or move more quickly towards chronic disease?

The answer is that our genes play a big role in this, but so does the environment in which we ask our genes to express themselves. By understanding our personal genetic challenges, we can focus on the changes which are likely to have the biggest impact on our healthful longevity i.e. staying healthy for as long as possible. We can help ourselves to look younger, but also feel younger too.

To age successfully and stave off chronic disease, we need to:

(i) give our bodies the correct materials to do the repair work,

(ii) give our bodies enough, but not too much, protein,

(iii) remove as many sources of damage (a.k.a oxidative stress) from our environment as possible,

(iv) have adequate detoxification and removal of toxins.

In summary, we need to take the stress off our system.

Where to start?

Begin with the understanding that more is not always better. Before we meet, so many of my clients are grazing their way through the day, never feeling satisfied as they pick their way through an abundance of food with a poor nutritional profile, drowning in food noise. Being overfed and undernourished leads to problematic aging: we feel older and look older.

To take your first step towards healthful aging, group your food intake into 3 meals a day. Make your peace with temporary sensations of hunger because it is in the gap between meals that some longevity magic happens.

Next: understand your genetic challenges in aging

I recommend Lifecode Gx’s Nutrient Core report and the Metabolics report.

The Nutrient Core report speaks to our personal ability to:

  • make vitamin A to support collagen production and skin repair,

  • absorb and distribute vitamin C which inhibits breakdown of collagen,

  • manufacture type 1 collagen,

  • inhibit inflammation.

The information in these reports is invaluable in giving ourselves the tools to age as well as we possibly can. The reports are very reasonably priced: the DNA swab kit is £74.25 and each report is £112.50. As I know from bitter experience with my daughter in Sephora, you can’t get much skincare for that!
