Where does weight loss actually come from?

I’m concluding this series of articles on weight, weight loss medication and metabolic health with this simple, but effective, diagram of a plate to illustrate where weight loss actually comes from.

My weight loss plate

This plate is for illustrative purposes only to make the important point that if we are constantly full or topping up by snacking, we are standing in the way of our body using some of our own stores of body fat for fuel.

It can be a really useful exercise to tune into our own fullness signals. You might find it helpful to rate your hunger out of 10 at the end of your meal. Eat slowly, chew well, enjoy your food and take a moment to assess whether you are actually still hungry before continuing to eat. Aim to leave the table at 80 or even 90% full and mentally allocate that additional 10 or 20% to your fat stores, if you are aiming for weight loss.

This simple technique can help to switch your perspective from feeling deprived to feeling satisfied, purposeful and empowered.

As always we are aiming for balance. Being overfull is not a good thing, being undernourished is not a good thing. We all have a middle ground where we thrive. We just need to find it.
